The Research Center of DY Patil University has opened in Navi Mumbai. The ten-story building is designed to support the university's teaching methods and philosophy, providing high-quality learning and living spaces for 3,000 students. The project also includes a two-hectare rooftop garden with native plants, pond animals, and relaxation areas. The new building – the first educational project undertaken in India – is the result of close collaboration between Foster + Partners and the University's President, Dr. Vijay Patil. The project has achieved a LEED Platinum rating, the highest level of recognition.
The new building has been designed to minimize environmental impact related to water and energy use, material selection, and operations. The extensive use of shading helps reduce energy consumption for mechanical cooling, and the building's facade provides daylight while controlling glare. The ventilation system, aided by wind towers, cools key spaces, including the auditorium and lounge areas. Water consumption is kept to a minimum.
The project incorporates a high-quality material palette, including travertine, wood, glass-reinforced concrete, aluminum, and sealed concrete. Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) was added to the concrete mix to replace a portion of the cement, resulting in lighter-colored concrete with lower carbon emissions. The modern interiors, designed by Foster + Partners' industrial design team, support comfortable and efficient learning.
