What Makes This Building the Most Sustainable Project in Germany?

Share:

The seven-story EDGE Suedkreuz Berlin office complex was sustainably constructed using modular wood-hybrid building methods. Covering an area of around 20,000 square meters, it has become the largest wood-hybrid building in Germany. The German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) certified the project as Germany’s most sustainable building in 2022.

The building features a spacious, light-filled atrium, extended by a transparent ETFE leaf roof supported by a timber frame structure. The central focal point includes four tree-branch-like structures, arranged at different heights, with platforms connected by stairways to each other and the office floors. On the fifth floor, the Sky Lounge offers panoramic views, with an outdoor terrace opening into the atrium. Wood is prominently present in all the building’s interior areas.

The project’s construction aimed to reduce CO2 emissions and the weight of the complex as much as possible, using sustainable, recyclable materials. The project saved 50% of the reinforced concrete typically used, resulting in lower CO2 emissions, reduced building weight, shorter construction times for the facade, high planning security and cost-effectiveness, and lasting durability.

The building’s energy supply relies on four key pillars: full capacity, efficiency, combined heat and power technology, and rational resource management. Conditions were established to enhance user awareness of conscious and efficient energy use. Office spaces are climate-controlled with smart suspended ceilings, and sufficient natural daylight in the offices reduces the need for artificial.

Unlocking Multi-Credit Synergies through Integrative Design in LEED v4

The realization of benefits associated with LEED starts with a transformation of the design process itself. Rather than treating credits as separate components on a checklist, an Integrative Process encourages project teams to identify synergies and interrelationships across multiple categories. By conducting early research and analysis during the "discovery" phase, teams can implement specific building features that "stack" points, achieving high levels of performance and cost-effectiveness.
