Revamping the Campus: Enhancing Experiences for Disabled Children

Share:

Damin High School in Ningbo, established in 1987, is a full-time institution dedicated to students with special educational needs and disabilities.

The majority of students have moderate to severe disabilities, with autistic students making up a quarter of the total. The project's goal is to renovate the entire campus to bring new energy, enhancing the spiritual and educational values for these children through unique architectural and landscape strategies.

Key Architectural Strategies:

  • "Garden of Love" Schoolyard: Offers a nature experience with diverse garden spaces such as the "Biosphere Garden" and the "Stone Garden." The schoolyard design reflects nature with shapes inspired by a four-leaf clover and three hearts, incorporating climbing elements from the school's existing visual system.

  • Outdoor Spaces of the "Garden of Love": Provides opportunities for group gatherings and private enjoyment. Open areas are available for group activities, while secluded spots, like the "Stone Garden," offer space for solitude and personal conversations.

  • Play Area: Emphasizes "education, rehabilitation, and exercise," with expanded outdoor spaces for play and rehabilitation training. It includes climbing equipment and group activities suited to the students' age and abilities, with features like mazes, jump ropes, and number recognition games to enhance sensory perception and physical development.

  • "Sensory Campus": Focuses on stimulating visual, auditory, and tactile senses. A variety of materials and play equipment enhance the students' sensory experiences. Plants with scents and flavors, such as ginkgo, osmanthus, and citrus, are selected to engage the students' sense of smell and taste.

Developing a sustainable education ecosystem: Behind the green certification consulting process for BUV

Phase 2 of the BUV campus is designed and constructed to meet international standards, with a particular focus on the EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) certification — a globally recognized green building standard developed by the IFC (a member of the World Bank Group). Beyond academic excellence, the new campus promotes a sustainable, environmentally friendly learning environment that enhances the overall experience for both students and faculty. Remarkably, only 20% of the campus area is used for construction, while the remaining space is dedicated to landscaping, greenery, and open communal areas. This design approach reflects a philosophy of harmony with nature and aligns with Ecopark’s vision — Asia’s leading sustainable urban area committed to green and livable spaces.
