Modular Design Method Brings Green Value to London

Butler Wiltshire has just completed a series of benches and plant containers for the City of London, made from recycled clay and wood. These modular sculptures and interlocking pieces are designed to reflect the city's unique architectural heritage and provide much-needed seating and green space in a district filled with skyscrapers.
Key Features of the Project:
- The modular design is based on the emblem of the city's historic trading companies, often represented by a five-sided shield or emblem.
- Use of natural, visually appealing, and handcrafted materials to create a contrast with the glass and steel of the city's high-rise buildings.
- Lower modules form benches with varying heights to cater to different accessibility needs and demographics. The wooden seat surfaces are crafted from fallen tree branches.
- The asymmetry of the modules and the variation in height establish a tangible design language that avoids repetition, bringing a dynamic feel suited to the commercial neighborhood.
