Light and Shadow: The Art of Architecture in a Small Urban House

Architecture is not only about blurring the boundaries between inside and outside but also about creating an interactive relationship between humans, nature, and the built environment. In a cramped urban setting with neighboring houses on three sides, the designers have developed a design language that optimizes the use of natural light, ventilation, and convenient green spaces within the home.
These methods create an open environment that extends connectivity and encourages interaction, enhancing the lifestyle of the inhabitants. This project represents an effort to transform space into a home that celebrates life in harmony with nature.
The design strategies of the project:
- Inspired by the quality of light in traditional Indian temples, the contrast of shadows increases as one moves from the outside to the inside, creating a sense of movement. The design focuses on bringing light primarily from the east, which faces the street, and from above.
- A large royal poinciana tree becomes the heart of the design, helping to divide the spatial axes between public and private areas— the south side for private spaces and the north side for public activities.
- The central open space functions as a connecting element, seamlessly linking different activities, allowing for the use of individual spaces while blending harmoniously with nature as a whole.
