Kaggalipura and the Story of Multi-Functional Caves

Share:

Kaggalipura is a small town located 40 kilometers south of Bangalore. A 3-acre plot of land has been transformed into an orchard with fruit trees such as mangoes, sapotas, bananas, coconuts, avocados, and jackfruits.

The concept began with multi-functional caves, embedded deep into the earth, designed around the existing trees and evolving over many years to become part of the natural landscape.

The materials used are locally sourced with minimal carbon footprint. Large rocks quarried from the surrounding area have been used for retaining walls, while smaller rocks and gravel have been employed for flooring in the courtyards.

Notable Architectural Features of the Project:

  • The sloping terrain facilitated the creation of a rainwater collection system to sustain existing farming practices.
  • A sloping incline leads to a flat area, allowing the building to be integrated into the landscape with minimal excavation.
  • The southern face of the building is dug into the earth to reduce heat absorption, while the northern face opens up to the landscape and maximizes natural light.

  • The roof is covered with soil, creating a seamless connection with the landscape, increasing thermal mass, and keeping the space below the house cool, while also providing an opportunity for small-scale cultivation on top.
  • The construction of the building involved local carpenters, artisans, and craftsmen from around the village of Kaggalipura, promoting community-based building activities.

Unlocking Multi-Credit Synergies through Integrative Design in LEED v4

The realization of benefits associated with LEED starts with a transformation of the design process itself. Rather than treating credits as separate components on a checklist, an Integrative Process encourages project teams to identify synergies and interrelationships across multiple categories. By conducting early research and analysis during the "discovery" phase, teams can implement specific building features that "stack" points, achieving high levels of performance and cost-effectiveness.
