HERmit Space-Beijing MAHA Art Gallery - RSAABüro Ziyu Zhuang

Share:

MAHA HERmit Space is an exhibition space located in a high-end residential park in the heart of Beijing. It is a unique project comprising three distinct areas: the "Island Area," the "Cave Area," and the "Slope Area."

Initially, the space consisted of three separate terraces in the community's underground parking lot. During the site’s redevelopment, the designers redefined the space through three different design approaches, empowering the space to create entirely new experiences. The goal of this redesign was to enhance community and landscape attributes to meet the needs of a contemporary art space, functioning as a community center with diverse content.

The sustainable architectural strategies of the MAHA HERmit Space, designed by RSAA/Büro Ziyu Zhuang, include:

  • Island Area: Located centrally and being the largest of the three terraces. The upper part is designed as a "canopy" with round windows all around, creating the impression of a metallic island floating amidst a sea of natural light. The design focuses on the center of the hall, while the space farther from the entrance is lower, creating a more intimate setting for small gatherings.

  • Cave Area: Shaped with a smooth curve, resembling a fissure in the ground, with a naturally curved entrance. The afternoon sunlight casts tree shadows through the crack in the evening, and artificial lighting creates intriguing visuals at night. Inside, the space is soft with a semi-open structure that invites the landscape in.

  • Slope Area: Positioned between the "Island Area" and the "Cave Area," this is the hub of community activity. Outside features a skate park, while inside includes a climbing wall and community rooms. The square-roofed structure of the skate park is deeply integrated into the space below.

Unlocking Multi-Credit Synergies through Integrative Design in LEED v4

The realization of benefits associated with LEED starts with a transformation of the design process itself. Rather than treating credits as separate components on a checklist, an Integrative Process encourages project teams to identify synergies and interrelationships across multiple categories. By conducting early research and analysis during the "discovery" phase, teams can implement specific building features that "stack" points, achieving high levels of performance and cost-effectiveness.
