Green Milestone in the Heart of Paris: A Landmark for Paris's Vision

Share:

The Aquatic Sports Center and pedestrian bridge in Saint-Denis, Paris, designed by VenhoevenCS and Ateliers 2/3/4/ for Heritage, is the only permanent structure built for the 2024 Olympics. The Aquatic Sports Center stands out as a curved wooden sculpture overlooking the Grand Paris landscape, blending technical innovations with the highest environmental certifications. With its smart configuration, limited material and energy use under an ultra-thin suspended roof, and the largest solar farm in any French urban area, the arena will host 5,000 spectators for Olympic competitions such as water polo, diving, and artistic swimming.

As the only facility built specifically for the first modern sustainable Olympics, in a city and metropolitan area that places environmental issues at the core of its policies, the Aquatic Sports Center goes beyond environmental regulations and requirements. Sustainability, biodiversity, and connectivity are key elements in all aspects of the nature-inspired design here.

Notable architectural elements of the Aquatic Sports Center and pedestrian bridge in Saint-Denis, designed by VenhoevenCS + Ateliers 2/3/4:

  • Curved wooden structure: The ultra-thin suspended roof is supported by a long-stretching wooden beam system, reducing the volume of air that needs to be conditioned by 50%.

  • Douglas fir wood cladding: The building's exterior is wrapped with Douglas fir lamella panels, providing sound insulation, ventilation, and protection from sunlight.

  • Multifunctional pool: The pool has adjustable dimensions with movable walls and floors, allowing optimal use and reducing water consumption by 25%.

  • Biomaterials: Priority is given to using biologically sourced materials, carefully selected for their quality, quantity, and origin to optimize their life cycle.
  • Green spaces: The project creates space for planting 100 trees, improving air quality, stimulating biodiversity, and creating new ecological connections.

  • Pedestrian bridge: The bridge connects the Aquatic Sports Center with Stade de France, forming an urban strategy combined with cohesive architecture.

  • Sports complex: The multifunctional sports complex and surrounding park are designed to encourage social interaction and recreation.
