A Sustainable Home for Students and Researchers in the Netherlands

Share:

The International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) is one of the prominent faculties at the University of Twente, Netherlands. Students pursuing Master's and PhD programs, along with researchers from around the world, converge in Enschede to explore sustainable solutions for the future.

ITC serves as a meeting place and a symbol of sustainability for the community there. Designed by Civic Architects, VDNDP, Studio Groen+Schild, and DS Landscape Architects, the facility includes classrooms, laboratories, a learning center, offices, a restaurant, and three interior gardens spread across a 13,605m² structure.

Architectural Strategies at the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC):

  • Utilizing Existing Structures: Instead of constructing new buildings, the institute chose to transform the 'Langezijds' building, a laboratory from 1972 with an impressive size, into a future-oriented sustainable building.
  • Four Terraces: Four terraces are integrated into the design, providing green spaces, fresh air, and natural light.
  • Integration with Nature: The building, located on Drienerlo land, merges architecture and landscape to create a nature-friendly working environment.
  • Atmospheric Buffer: The terraces not only serve as green spaces but also act as the building's "green lungs," aiding in the natural air circulation process.
  • Social Heart: Interaction among departments, faculty, and students is centered in the "Social Heart," where people gather and dine together.
  • Blending Old and New: The construction reflects a mix of old and new structures, showcasing exposed concrete and steel alongside the warmth of wooden doors and bamboo floors.
  • Community Design Style: Learning spaces, offices, laboratories, and study areas are organically arranged to facilitate interaction among faculty, students, and researchers within the interior courtyards.
